The Outeniqua Hiking Trail
Av Hiking Time: 6 hours.
Highlights: Beautiful Jubilee Creek walk. Hot showers!
Be prepared for: A steep uphill with no shade just after Jubilee Creek.
NB: The time it takes to walk this route as indicated on the map Sanparks gives you is wrong. The day will take around 5 hours and not 7 hours as indicated on the map.
The day starts with a nice flat and downhill hike in the forest. The path is wide path (much better than day before) and turns into jeep track.
This leads down to a beautiful river rope crossing where you will get your feet wet so make sure you keep your sandals close by.
The river crossing is followed by a steep uphill, onto more jeep track before the beautiful Jubilee Creek walk. You may run into other day travellers here as this spot is a favourite for "picnickers".
Jubilee has a history of gold and you will see remnants of mines and miners along the trail. There is a chance to swim at the waterfall just before your final ascent. If you get to this point at midday I would take the time to swim first and let the hottest part of the day pass as the next ascent is in full sun and is very long and hot.
Make sure you stop at Mother Holly's coffee shop once you get to the top. This is only 50m from Millwood hut and has AMAZING burgers! Mother Molly's also has a small museum that is very interesting.
Note that as of writing this (2014) Molly's is closed on a Monday and closes daily at 4pm. (In other words take food along in case Molly's is closed).
Short walk to your hut and hot showers! Cabin has no electricity but toilets do!
Tips for Day 4:
- Keep your costume close and swim at Jubilee Creek waterfall.
- This is a relatively easy day so use it to recover from the previous day.
- Make sure you have cash for a burger if the restaurant is open.
